Bottom Line: A raw and violent gangster drama that ends on an average note
Story
After disastrous outings like Padi Padi Leche Manasu, Sharwanand has teamed up with the talented Sudheer Varma for the action packed gangster drama Ranarangam costarring kajal Aggarwal and Kalyani Priyadarshan. Here's team AP Herald's exclusive first on net Ranarangam review.
Deva (Sharwanand) is a top gangster in Spain and he's the top name in his business. However his rise to top has been filled with blood, violence and the story moves to the past where he is shown to be in love with Kalyani, and then moves to illegal drug dealing, ultimately leading to his loss in love. What happened to Kalyani, who's Kajal Aggarwal, and what threats happened to Sharwa, and was he able to retain his kingdom is what Ranarangam is all about.
Star Performance
Sharwanand is classy and massy in his role with two shades and while he's energetic and bubbly in the younger phase, he turns intense and subtle in the older phase. Kalyani Priyadarshan is pretty and emotes well while Kajal Aggarwal is hot and is perfectly utilized for glamour. The rest of the cast including Murali Sharma, Ajay, Brammaji are adequate.
Techinical Team
Prashanth Pillai's background score is terrific while of the songs Kannu kotti and Pilla picture perfect are superb. Cinematography by Divakar Mani captures the violence in impactful manner while editing by Navin nooli could have been better. The production values are rich, but the writing has been lukewarm. Art Direction is good. It shows the past side in a beautiful way. Kajal has no role until the first half and the first half doesn't have much twists. The narration is just decent.
Analysis
After Keshava Sudheer Varma is back this time with a violent entertainer that happens in two time frames. Both the periods are shown authentically and while the first half builds the tension perfectly with tense violent episodes and the second half brings some mass and goosebumps moments though there are some drags. Sharwanand lifts the movie with his terrific underplayed act while Kalyani Priyadarshan and kajal perfectly complement his act. With rich technical team and great music and visuals Sudheer Varma has delivered a pretty decent gangster drama that could have been even more crisp without drags and extended runtime.
