Bottom Line: Another Political movie which Fails Big Time and Suriya's wait for a Hit Continues

Story

After more than a year, Suriya is back on screen teaming up with director Selvaraghavan who had a release lastly before six years, with their latest offering NGK. Here's team AP Herald's exclusive first on net NGK review.

The film revolves around how Nanda Gopalan Kumaran aka NGK, a common man slowly rises in taking the political plunge, fighting to rise against evil biggies like Devaraj, Ponvannan and Vela Ramamoorthy. NGK and his wife Geetha face troubles as well on his path to political success, while PR head Vanathi makes big moves influencing politics in strange ways. Was NGK able to succeed in politics is what the movie is all about.

Star Performance

Suriya has given an impressive and intense performance, as he excels with expressions of anger, romance and is a ball of fire. Sai Pallavi delivers a measured performance and is a natural while Rakul Preet Singh is just about adequate. Devaraj, Ponvannan, Vela Ramamoorthy as scheming political Sharks are aptly cast while Ilavarasu and Uma come good as well in the limited scope. Rakul Preet's role was similar to the role of Priya Anand in 'LKG'. Sai Pallavi overreacts in many instances. Suriya's climax stage speech is sure to give goosebumps.

Techinical Team

Yuvan Shankar Raja gives a pulsating background score while of his songs only Anbae Peranbae stands out. Cinematography by Sivakumar Vijayan is top notch capturing the action and the milieu of NGK perfectly while editing by Praveen KL falters. The running time of the movie tests the patience of the audience. Especially, a poor second half spoils the entire movie. Abrupt cuts and Illogical scenes pull the movie down further.

Analysis

Returning after six years director Selvaraghavan has tried to move away from his most comfortable genre of human relationships and has touched politics which was a small part of his cult classic Pudhupettai. However NGK doesn't come perfectly thanks to a wavering, inconsistent screenplay. The first half of the movie moves at a decent pace establishing the characters but the second half is more of drags and unrealistic sequences showing the rise of NGK. The placement of songs and forced dialogues look damaging and Suriya and Sai Pallavi try hard to resurrect the movie and could succeed partially only. Selvaraghavan shines in bits and pieces, but on the whole, despite earnest performances of the lead pair and some good technical support from Yuvan and Sivakumar Vijayan, NGK ends an average outing with simplistic approach towards dealing a political entertainer.
